Brock's Bytes - August 28th, 2022

Brock Herion
Hey there! As always, thank you for taking the time to read Brock’s Bytes and I hope you enjoy this week’s edition.

As I mentioned last week, I’ve been working on my new productivity system and trying to develop new healthy habits. This week I really focused on my journaling and getting things out of my head and onto paper. I also set up templates in Notion to help me structure and plan Brock’s Bytes. This has been really helpful and makes writing it feel less overwhelming. I set up something similar for my blog posts, so expect to see more from my blog soon!
I didn’t get as much programming done as I would have liked. I did a few Leetcode problems but didn’t make any progress on my projects. Part of this was because I spent that time on self-care. Sometimes it’s essential to just take a step back and focus on yourself. Because of what I did this week, I’m ready to start pushing these projects forward next week.
Now without further ado, let’s get into this week’s bytes!
I’m studying
I’m revisiting data structures and algorithms right now. It was something I struggled with in school but is a skill I want to get better at. I’ve been practicing Leetcode every day and working my way through a Udemy course. While these topics do come up quite a bit in interviews, I’ve also found that studying these has helped me in day-to-day programming. I’m not implementing a binary search every day, but I am solving problems. Doing the practice problems has been helping me improve my problem-solving skills and get a better grasp of computer science fundamentals.
I found this YouTube channel
This is a video from a YouTube channel I found recently. The channel focuses on productivity but talks about things that other channels don’t. And at a time when I have been struggling with being my own productivity system and staying motivated, this channel has been a breath of fresh air. I resonated with this video specifically because it’s very similar to how I do things. I always thought I was just lazy for putting things off, but it’s just how my brain works. I’m somebody who needs to be invested and excited about what I’m doing for me to want to do it. I need to work on finding more ways to get motivated and excited about some of the things I want/have to do for myself that I don’t feel like doing. You can watch the video here
I started reading
I started Steve Jobs on Audible. I’ve seen this book come up a few times in various book lists and have been meaning to pick it up. I enjoy listening to audiobooks while I do work on things that don’t require a lot of focus, like mining sessions in Minecraft. This book has been great so far. It’s a great look into Jobs’s life and how he worked. If you’re interested in reading along with me, you can pick up the book on Amazon
I’m trying out
I’ve been using Bun for practicing Leetcode. I submit my solutions in TypeScript, but write them JavaScript on my laptop and run them with Node. Hearing Bun was really fast, I installed it and decided to give it a try. I was shocked at the performance difference. I ran my solution to #27, Remove Element, in both ts-node and Bun. Running the script in ts-node took about 0.97s and using Bun was about 0.01s. I can’t believe the speed difference for such a little script and will definitely be using Bun more
I’m listening to
I’ve been listening to Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I recently finished up Peaky Blinders on Netflix and loved every second of it. Red Right Hand is the opening theme that perfectly encapsulates the main character, Tommy Shelby, and sets the tone for the rest of the show. It’s becoming one of my favorite songs!
I’m building
I’m working on Chirpmark, an app for organizing and managing Twitter bookmarks. I haven’t had much time to work on it this week, but I will be jumping back into it next week. I have a few things I’m working on simplifying and cleaning up. If you’re interested in getting access, you can DM me on Twitter or send me an email. I’ve been using
I’ve been using this awesome charger from Morphie. It’s a 3-in-1 that lets me charge my iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPod Pros in one unit. It charges really quickly with all three devices on there and looks great in my setup. It’s been a great addition and recommend this if you’re looking for a simple charging solution for your Apple devices
I’ve been pondering
I’ve been looking into the concept of life planning and have spent some time thinking about where I’m at and where I want to go. I looked at what my long-term goals were a year ago and what they are now. I realized that where I want to be in five to ten years hasn’t changed all that much. I’m thinking about what kinds of things I need to do to reach those goals. While I’m on a better path now, I still have a few areas in my life I need to figure out.
That's a wrap!
